History

Summer Solutions began operating in 2004 as Pro-Active Summer Camp with the purpose of teaching educational objectives through field trip experiences on a daily basis. Elementary aged students participated in focus lessons for an hour each morning on various topics in Math, Science, History, Reading, Writing, and Fine Arts. Students would then load up onto the bus and prepare to embark on an adventure to one of the DC area’s many attractions, where they would solve problems and make connections to their morning lesson. At the end of the day, students would reflect and write journal entries documenting their experience.

During the winter months of 2007, Pro-Active Summer Camp filed the necessary applications and earned the 501c(3) non-profit status. The organization assumed the umbrella name, Summer Solutions Incorporated, and modified its mission. This allowed us to redirect our efforts to support the growing need for educational summer options for students from low-income households.

Just in time for the 2008 school year, the company began a tutoring and mentoring program and offered services in the Reston/Herndon area. In the Spring of 2009, the “Student Development Program” was completed with the introduction of the after-school Organizational Study Group program. This bundle of services allowed the organization to operate during the school year to provide additional academic, behavioral, and organizational support to students that would lead to increased academic optimism in the classroom.

In the summer of 2009, the summer camp program took a slightly different direction with the introduction of a new concept that remains our focus today: Teaching Values Through Sports and Recreation. The highlights of our original program were preserved and complemented with the addition of an outstanding character education curriculum. Teachers present stories from various athletes and notable people in the sports and entertainment world to help teach lessons on leadership, teamwork, and the power of encouragement. Students work with each other to increase their team’s capacity each day as they engage in healthy competition through sports and team building activities. Our goal is to reinforce strong values and allow students to learn and practice them daily through social interaction, sport, and recreation. At the end of each week, students participate in field trips where they are able to have fun and celebrate their accomplishments at some of Virginia’s most exciting summer destinations.
