Study Group Program FAQ
  1. Who are the “Academic Advisors” leading the study group sessions?
    1. The group leaders are Virginia certified teachers working in the same school that the program is being offered. This ensures quality control and an active measure of accountability for each student enrolled.
  2. How often does the program meet?
    1. The after-school study group program meets once a week at a regularly scheduled time, although many parents choose to enroll their children for multiple days as needed.
  3. Do I need to enroll for the entire semester or year?
    1. No. You can enroll for one quarter at a time, although it is much cheaper to enroll for longer periods of time.
  4. Can I enroll at any time throughout the school year?
    1. Yes. We do offer open enrollment for the study group program although there are strict space limitations. For greatly flexibility in choosing days and scheduling, we recommend that you register well in advance of the desired quarter. Once registered into a specific study group for the duration of the semester or school year, you do not have to worry about losing your scheduled day of the week or place within the group.
  5. What do they need to bring to the first meeting?
    1. Students will need to come prepared with homework/study materials as well as with their assignment notebooks and a healthy snack. All other materials will be provided by the advisor.

    1. Our study groups will never be larger than five students and will rarely be smaller than three.
  7. Will my student be given enough individual attention in these groups?
    1. The purpose of the study group is for students to learn organizational strategies that will allow them to become more effective students in the classroom. With the small group instruction that is offered, each student benefits from individual attention as needed to ensure the understanding of the course objectives. Keep in mind however, that this is not designed to be a tutoring session on content area objectives, rather a class for the development of strong organizational and study habits.
  8. How do I know if this program is right for my child?
    1. If your child could benefit from additional support in the areas of organization, study skills, test preparation, and time management, then this program will surely be a great option for you. It is the perfect solution for a student that needs an ally within the school building to ensure that proper steps are taken to prepare for scheduled tests, projects, quizzes, and other assignments. These weekly academic check-ups keep students motivated to succeed and meet their educational goals.

The program is designed to meet the organizational needs of students and should not be relied on to achieve focused academic support in specific content areas. There is scheduled time for homework support and academic attention, but it is not the sole purpose of the study groups. For more focused instructional time, our one-on-one tutoring option might be a better fit.
